Heating and cooling in Ontario
Ontario's Building Department Fees page sets plan check fees at 80% of the permit fees and adds an earthquake charge of 0.0001 times valuation. It lists separate fee tables for building (A), electrical (B), mechanical (C) and plumbing (D) permits, and the tables are downloadable files. Table C holds the mechanical amounts, so ask for it when you compare quotes. The permit technicians, at 909-395-2023, are the ones to confirm the exact amount due at issuance.
The department's Building Permit FAQs explain how to apply, under Plan Submittal Requirements, and define an inspection as a city inspector visit that checks the work against the approved plans and the code. Air rules here come from the South Coast AQMD, which contains Ontario's reference point on the state's air district map, and an address near a boundary can fall elsewhere. Its Rule 1111 covers natural-gas fan-type central furnaces sold or installed in the district, limiting NOx to 14 nanograms per joule of useful heat unless the manufacturer pays the rule's per-unit mitigation fee.
Ask for the model number when a quote doesn't show it. SoCalGas is the gas utility at that same point. Its rebate for an ENERGY STAR furnace at 92% AFUE or better runs $1.40 to $25 per kBTUh, one per household, and pays by prepaid card within six to eight weeks. It needs proof of permit closure, so get the final sign-off from the city before you mail the form.
What heating and cooling work costs near Ontario
Nobody's given us a quote for work in Ontario yet, so this page can't show a city price. The California page lists what technicians earn (the California median in 2025 BLS wage data is $36.24 an hour, which is their pay, not your price). How we estimate costs.
Permits for heating and cooling work in Ontario
Under the California Mechanical Code, replacing a furnace, air handler, coil or condenser needs a building permit, and so does adding ducting, as the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) told C-20 contractors in a 2010 letter. Code details vary by city and county, so ask the building department for your address what it needs.
