Who may wire a thermostat in Texas
TDLR's page for air conditioning contractors says anyone who installs, repairs or maintains systems related to air conditioning, refrigeration or heating must hold a license. The Occupations Code, in its 2018 wording, defines the work as installing or servicing equipment or a product in an environmental air conditioning system. Neither source says whether a thermostat counts, so call TDLR at (512) 463-6599 before you assume it doesn't.
What a thermostat costs to install in Texas
We estimate $110 to $365 per thermostat for this job in Texas. That's a model, not a quote: one national published cost range, widened by 15 percent each side and adjusted by the Texas wage ratio to the US (0.91).
Our estimate is $110 to $365 per thermostat, as an estimate and not a quote. Ask whether the price includes the thermostat itself, wiring changes and any setup.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $110 to $365 per thermostat | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Texas HVAC technician wage ratio (0.91). Three Texas HVAC companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Texas company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Technician wage, Texas mean | $28.43 an hour | May 2025 BLS mean for Texas HVAC technicians; the thermostat itself is a separate cost. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. We have no counted Texas company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Our national estimate takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Texas's HVAC technician mean wage ratio to the US (0.91, BLS OEWS May 2025, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers). The wage and permit rows below are what HVAC technicians are paid and what a city charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes. Full method. Prices as of Oct 23, 2026.
Utility programs and what ERCOT's page says
CPS Energy's home page lists a WiFi Thermostat Rewards incentive, with no amount printed. ERCOT's demand response page describes products for customers who can cut or shift electricity use on instruction or when prices move, and points to a list of Demand Response Providers. SECO's rebate page says your local utility or municipality may have incentives of its own, and its state programs weren't open as of Aug 21, 2026.
Thermostat trouble that can't wait
- A burning smell comes from the thermostat or the wall behind it: leave and call 911 from outside.
- A carbon monoxide alarm is going off: get outside and call 911.
- The thermostat screen is blank or the schedule is wrong, and the system still runs.
Before you buy a smart thermostat
- Ask your electric utility whether a thermostat program is open and what it requires.
- Check the current thermostat's wire count against the new one's instructions.
- Call TDLR if you want to know whether a swap needs a contractor.
Permits and a thermostat swap
Austin's list of residential mechanical work that needs no permit names minor part replacement and duct runs. Whether new thermostat wiring needs a permit is a question for your city's permit office.
Before any work starts, get the license number and check it with your state's licensing board; our state pages link the lookup.
