When radiators or baseboards go cold
Michigan's statute calls heating with fluids or vapors circulated in pipes hydronic heating, which covers hot-water and steam boilers alike. Flint averages about 6,850 heating degree days a year and Saginaw about 6,781 (NOAA normals for 1991 to 2020, base 65 F), and 93.2% of homes in Flint and 92.8% in Saginaw were built before 1980 (Census ACS 2023).
What boiler repair costs in Michigan: wages, permits and an energy figure
Our estimate for this job in Michigan is $125 to $800 per repair. It is a model, not a quote, built from one national published cost range, widened by 15 percent each side, and adjusted by Michigan's wage ratio to the US (1.00).
Company prices will join this table, with a count of companies and the date we read them, once we have gathered enough of what Michigan heating and cooling companies publish on their own sites. Until then it shows technician wages, boiler permit fees and a federal energy figure.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $125 to $800 per repair | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan HVAC technician wage ratio (1.00). |
| Technician wage, Michigan mean | $31.01 an hour | Technician pay (BLS, May 2025), not a price. |
| Technician wage, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn mean | $32.06 an hour | Technician pay, not a price. |
| Boiler permit, Warren | $80 | Form dated 4/25/2023; confirm with the city. |
| Boiler permit, Dearborn | $50 under 75,000 | Plus $100 administrative fee. |
| Residential boiler permit, Westland | $83 | Plus $100 administration fee. |
| Residential boiler permit, LARA state | $30 plus a $75 application | Only where the state enforces the code. |
| ENERGY STAR gas boiler savings | about $780 over its life | ENERGY STAR estimate, not a Michigan figure. |
How we estimate costs: the figures here are estimates, not quotes, built from BLS wages, published city permit fees and federal energy-cost evidence. We are collecting the prices Michigan heating and cooling companies publish; we have not yet collected quotes from them, and we will say how many and from when once we do. Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (1 source), adjusted by Michigan's HVAC technician wage ratio to the US (1.00, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. We have too few Michigan company prices yet to show a range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
Repair or replace a boiler
ENERGY STAR says heating equipment more than 10 years old, or not heating the house well, should be evaluated by a professional HVAC contractor. That marks when to have the boiler evaluated and gives no lifespan. The repair-or-replace tool helps you weigh it, and the furnace replacement page covers rebates for gas furnaces; check with your utility about boilers.
- The contractor names a single failed part and shows it.
- An evaluation points to replacement; get it in writing, with a second opinion.
Plumber, heating company or both
Michigan licenses boiler work as mechanical work, in our reading: Article 8 of 2016 PA 407 sets up mechanical contractor classes that include hydronic heating and cooling and process piping, limited heating service and unlimited heating service. The statute defines limited heating service to include gas sectional boilers up to 1 million Btu/h. LARA has no page that maps a boiler repair to one class, so matching class to job is our inference.
Plumbing is licensed separately. Where the two overlap, LARA says so: replacing a gas water heater needs a mechanical license in the HVAC equipment or gas piping and venting classification and a plumbing contractor's license. A company may hold both, so ask for the license numbers and check them on the LARA lookup. See furnace repair for the gas furnace side, and the guide to hiring a licensed HVAC contractor.
Yearly service and efficiency
Consumers Energy, DTE and ENERGY STAR advise a yearly check of heating equipment, and none makes it a Michigan requirement. ENERGY STAR's specification for gas boilers is 90% AFUE, about 6% more efficient than the federal standard, and says it can save about $780 over the life of the product. The $780 is a federal estimate and does not come from Michigan bills.
Boiler problems that cannot wait
- You smell gas: leave, then call 911 and your gas utility from outside.
- A carbon monoxide alarm sounds: get into fresh air and call 911.
- No heat in freezing weather: see emergency HVAC repair.
- A boiler that heats but needs a yearly check.
What to check before you call
- Set the thermostat to heat, above the room temperature.
- Check whether other gas appliances work, which tells you whether gas is reaching the house.
- Note any light, code or noise from the boiler and stop; do not open the boiler or relight after a gas smell.
Permits for boiler work
LARA says permits for steam or vapor boilers up to 15 psig in private residences or apartment houses of fewer than six families must be secured by a licensed mechanical contractor in the hydronic heating and cooling and process piping classification. Replacement of minor parts is excepted from permits generally, while replacing a boiler is not on LARA's exemption list, which is our inference. Many Michigan cities issue their own mechanical permits; see the mechanical permit guide.
Ask for the license number and check it with your state's licensing board before any work starts. Our state pages link the lookup.

A tool for this job
Repair or replace, by age and quote
If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, leave first. Otherwise four taps give a direction based on the one age fact we could source: ENERGY STAR says equipment more than 10 years old, or not keeping the house comfortable, should be evaluated by a professional HVAC contractor. It marks when to get an evaluation and gives no lifespan, and the tool asks for and prints no prices.

Do you call a plumber to fix a boiler?
Michigan licenses mechanical contractors under Article 8 of 2016 PA 407, separately from plumbing, with classes such as hydronic heating and cooling and heating service. Which class covers a given boiler job is our inference. Ask for license numbers and check LARA.
Does boiler repair need a permit in Michigan?
LARA excepts replacement of minor parts. For steam or vapor boilers up to 15 psig in a private residence, the permit must be secured by a licensed mechanical contractor in the hydronic classification.
How much does boiler repair cost in Michigan?
The first row is a statewide estimate, a model and not a quote. The rows below show technician wages, a Michigan mean of $31.01 an hour (BLS, May 2025), which is pay, not a charge, and boiler permit fees from three cities and the state. Get the repair price in writing before work starts.
Is a yearly boiler service required in Michigan?
ENERGY STAR, Consumers Energy and DTE advise a yearly check of heating equipment. Each source gives it as advice, and none makes it law.
What should I do if I smell gas near my boiler?
DTE says to call 911 and then its gas leak hotline, (800) 947-5000. Do not use switches, appliances or phones in the building.
