What a central AC installation includes
A central air conditioner is an outdoor unit, an indoor coil and the ducts that carry the cooled air. A replacement swaps the equipment and reconnects the sealed refrigerant lines and wiring. EPA lets only certified technicians buy refrigerant for stationary air conditioning, so charging the system is the contractor's job.
Ducts decide how much of the cooled air reaches the rooms. ENERGY STAR says sealing and insulating ducts can improve a heating and cooling system's efficiency by as much as 20 percent, so ask whether ducts are in the quote. See duct cleaning for what that evidence covers.
What we can show on AC installation costs in Michigan
Our estimate for this job in Michigan is $4,325 to $9,600 per installed system. It is a model, not a quote, built from one national published cost range, widened by 15 percent each side, and adjusted by Michigan's wage ratio to the US (1.00), with a typical permit fee added for the work.
Michigan heating and cooling companies publish some prices on their own sites, and we are collecting them. Once we have enough, they will go in this table with the number of companies and the date we read them. The AC repair cost guide covers what moves a quote.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $4,325 to $9,600 per installed system | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan HVAC technician wage ratio (1.00) plus a typical permit fee ($105). |
| HVAC mechanic and installer wage, Michigan mean | $31.01 an hour | What Michigan heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers are paid (BLS, May 2025), not what you are charged. |
| Mechanical permit, Grand Rapids, replacement AC | $21.00 plus a $52.00 application | Fee schedule effective July 1, 2026. |
| Mechanical permit, Sterling Heights, A/C 5 ton or less | $57 plus a $55 application | 2026-27 application form; the city decides which row a replacement uses. |
| Mechanical permit, Dearborn, split AC under 5 tons | $30, within an $80 minimum and a $100 administrative fee | Form dated Oct 2025. |
| Mechanical permit, Westland, residential A/C 5 ton max | $83, with a $100 administration fee | The form also lists a $100 minimum permit fee; ask the city whether it applies. |
| Mechanical permit, State of Michigan, split AC | $30 plus a $75 application | Only where LARA, not the city, enforces the code. |
| Federal illustration: central AC annual energy cost, Northern states | $504, $444 or $288 a year | Less efficient, ENERGY STAR, best available. DOE FEMP, at a federal electricity price. |
| DTE central AC rebate, Oct 19, 2026 | $100 to $300 | By SEER2 tier; funds limited, first come first served. |
| Consumers Energy split central AC rebate, 2026 installs | $150 or $300 | $150 for 15.2 to 15.99 SEER2, $300 for 16 or more; amounts can change without notice. |
How we estimate costs: the figures here are estimates, not quotes, built from BLS wages, published city permit fees and federal energy-cost evidence. We are collecting the prices Michigan heating and cooling companies publish; we have not yet collected quotes from them, and we will say how many and from when once we do. Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (1 source), adjusted by Michigan's HVAC technician wage ratio to the US (1.00, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. We have too few Michigan company prices yet to show a range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
Replace now, or repair first
ENERGY STAR says equipment more than 10 years old, or not keeping the house comfortable, should be evaluated by a professional HVAC contractor. If the unit still runs, try AC repair first.
Sizing: ask for the Manual J result
Manual J is the load calculation that sizes cooling equipment from the house itself. Ask for the result in writing; "the same size as the old one" is not an answer. The system size estimator gives a first idea only.
Michigan programs already ask for it. Lansing Board of Water & Light requires a Manual J for its central heat pump rebate, and Ann Arbor's A2ZERO rebates ask for one on heat pumps.
Efficiency ratings, refrigerant and the 2026 EPA rule
Federal law sets 13.4 SEER2 as the minimum for a split-system air conditioner made on or after January 1, 2023, and the extra regional requirements apply to the Southeast and Southwest, not Michigan. For Northern states, DOE's FEMP illustrates central AC energy cost at $504 a year for a less efficient model, $444 for an ENERGY STAR model and $288 for the best available. FEMP uses a federal electricity price, so treat these as an illustration; your own bill will differ.
On refrigerant, EPA limits new residential air conditioners to lower-GWP refrigerants, a global warming potential of 700, from January 1, 2025. A May 2026 EPA rule lets installers use pre-2025 inventory until supply runs out. Ask which refrigerant the unit uses.
Rebates for central air from DTE and Consumers Energy
On Oct 19, 2026, DTE's page listed $300 for a central AC of 18 SEER2 or more, $200 from 16 to 17.99 and $100 from 15.2 to 15.99, with a "Limited Funds Available" notice and first come, first served. Consumers Energy's 2026 chart lists $150 for a split central AC of 15.2 to 15.99 SEER2 and $300 for 16 or more, for installs from January 1 to December 31, 2026, and says amounts can change without notice.
The federal 25C credit ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. See the rebate guide.
When a failed AC cannot wait for a replacement quote
- A heat advisory is in effect, the air conditioner is not cooling, and someone in the house is very young, elderly or medically vulnerable to heat.
- Water or a burning smell is coming from the equipment.
- The old system still cools.
Before you collect bids
- Ask each bidder for the Manual J result and the SEER2 rating in writing.
- Ask who pulls the permit and what the quote says about the inspection.
Permit, license and doing it yourself in Michigan
LARA's exemption list covers window air conditioners of not more than 1.5 hp and portable equipment under 30,000 Btu/hr. Replacing a central air conditioner is not on it, so it needs a mechanical permit. LARA does not say that in a sentence; we infer it from the list. The mechanical code is the 2021 International Mechanical Code; a 2024 edition is proposed.
The licensed mechanical contractor pulls the permit. An owner-occupant of a single-family home may install a system personally, with a permit and an inspection once the equipment is running. Refrigerant still needs a certified technician. See the mechanical permit guide.
Ask for the license number and check it with your state's licensing board before any work starts. Our state pages link the lookup.

A tool for this job
System size estimator with the Manual J warning
This tool returns no tonnage, because no sourced square-foot-per-ton rule exists to cite, and a rule like that is the shortcut a proper load calculation exists to replace. Answer four questions and you get what pushes your house's load up or down, the Manual J question for your contractor, and the Michigan facts that matter. It runs in your browser and asks for nothing.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
How much does it cost to install an AC in Michigan?
We have not collected Michigan quotes, so the first row of the cost table is a statewide estimate, a model and not a quote. Ask for bids in writing.
Can you install an AC yourself in Michigan?
Michigan lets an owner-occupant of a single-family home install a system personally, with a permit and an inspection afterwards. EPA's refrigerant rules still apply: only a certified technician may buy refrigerant, and venting it is prohibited.
Does installing an air conditioner need a permit in Michigan?
Yes for a central system. It is not on LARA's exemption list, which names window units of not more than 1.5 hp. Cities such as Grand Rapids and Sterling Heights set their own fees, shown in the table.
What size air conditioner does my house need?
A Manual J load calculation of your house answers it. Ask for the result in writing, and use the system size estimator for a first idea only.
Are there rebates for central AC in Michigan?
Yes, with dates: DTE listed $100 to $300 on Oct 19, 2026, and Consumers Energy lists $150 or $300 for 2026 installs. Check your utility before you sign.
