Which rebates apply to your heating or cooling job?

Pick your utility, your equipment and your household, and the finder shows each program's status with the date we checked it, October 19, 2026. Federal credits 25C and 25D ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS, even though ENERGY STAR's heat pump page still advertises one. It prints no amount without its program, tier and date.

MiHER: income-qualified rebates, with a regional suspension (checked Oct 19, 2026)

Chosen when: Household: Income-qualified (MiHER)

MiHER, the Michigan Home Energy Rebates program run by EGLE, is for income-qualified households. Its HEAR part covers high-efficiency electric equipment such as heat pumps for households at or below 150% of area median income, and its HOMES part covers whole-home efficiency including heating and cooling. Households under 80% of area median income may qualify for enhanced rebates, with up to 100% of project costs covered and the rebate paid to a MiHER-registered contractor. Status, checked Oct 19, 2026 (the page shows no date): new income-qualified applications are temporarily suspended in the Detroit, Warren, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Kalamazoo districts while MiHER reviews applications and funding capacity, and the program says it will reopen them when capacity and funding are enough. Caps are $14,000 per household for HEAR and $20,000 for HOMES, and the two cannot be combined for the same upgrade. The page shows no per-unit heat pump amount, so any figure quoted to you should be checked on EGLE's page or with its call center at 855-510-7080. EGLE assigns the districts by county, and we have not mapped each city, so ask which district your address falls in. Federal credits: the IRS says the 25C credit (heat pumps and other home efficiency upgrades) and the 25D credit (geothermal heat pumps) do not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025 (IRS pages last reviewed April 28 and July 4, 2026; checked Oct 19, 2026). ENERGY STAR's own heat pump page still advertises a federal credit through 2032; the IRS says the 25C credit ended; we follow the IRS. If a salesperson quotes a federal credit for a 2026 install, ask for the IRS citation.

Try first: Ask EGLE's call center which MiHER district your address is in and whether it is open.

Stop and call someone if: A contractor quotes a MiHER amount you cannot find on EGLE's page.

Not sure of your utility: find it on your bill

Chosen when: Who is your utility: I am not sure

Your utility is named on your bill, and the electric company and the gas company may be different ones. Utility territories vary by address, including near city lines, so a city name alone is not proof of who serves you. The Michigan Public Service Commission's utility contact table lists the customer service line for each utility. Once you know which companies serve you, run this tool again with the right one picked. Rebate programs are dated: every status line in this tool says when we checked it, and amounts can change before you apply.

Try first: Find the company names on your latest gas and electric bills.

Stop and call someone if: A contractor tells you which rebate you qualify for without naming your utility.

Another utility: what we found, and the federal status (checked Oct 19, 2026)

Chosen when: Who is your utility: Another utility · or · Any other answers

We researched DTE Energy, Consumers Energy, Lansing Board of Water & Light and Ann Arbor's A2ZERO program, and did not read a program for your utility with amounts we can print. Michigan Gas Utilities says on its page that it offers rebates on home heating through Efficiency United; its page shows no amounts and no list of the cities it serves, so check with them directly (checked Oct 19, 2026, page undated). Municipal and cooperative electric utilities sometimes run their own programs, so look at your bill for the company name and its website. For the income-qualified state program, switch the household question to MiHER.

Try first: Search your utility's name with the word rebate and read the page date.

Stop and call someone if: A rebate is quoted with no program name, tier or date.

DTE's furnace rebates are for natural gas customers. The page lists $400 for a furnace at 98% AFUE or higher, $200 at 97% and 96% AFUE and $100 at 95% AFUE. Through a participating contractor, qualifying homes are single-family with 2 or fewer connected units and built more than 24 months ago; new construction is not eligible, and the check arrives in 6 to 8 weeks. For a limited time DTE shows $300 in additional bonuses for qualified installs from Oct 1 to Dec 15, 2026, with applications due by Dec 18, 2026; confirm on DTE's page before you rely on the bonus. DTE's furnace line is (866) 796-0512. Status, checked Oct 19, 2026: DTE's page shows a Limited Funds Available banner, rebates are first come, first served, and the page carries no publish date. Federal credit: the IRS says the 25C credit ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 (checked Oct 19, 2026), though ENERGY STAR's heat pump page still shows one through 2032; we follow the IRS, and a quote that includes a federal credit for a 2026 install should come with the IRS citation.

Try first: Ask the contractor for the furnace's AFUE rating and which DTE tier it hits.

Stop and call someone if: A bonus is quoted with no dates.

DTE central air conditioner rebate: amounts by SEER2 tier (checked Oct 19, 2026)

Chosen when: Who is your utility: DTE Energy; What are you replacing or adding: Central air conditioner

DTE's central air conditioner rebates are for electric customers. The page lists $300 for 18 or more SEER2, $200 for 16 to 17.99 SEER2 and $100 for 15.2 to 15.99 SEER2. DTE's table sits under a headline that says up to $300, so take the amounts from the table and confirm eligibility rules on the page.

Try first: Ask the contractor for the SEER2 rating of the exact model quoted.

Stop and call someone if: A SEER2 figure is quoted for a model number you cannot find.

Chosen when: Who is your utility: DTE Energy; What are you replacing or adding: Heat pump · or · Who is your utility: DTE Energy; What are you replacing or adding: Ductless mini-split

DTE's heat pump rebates are only for electric customers replacing electric heating, in single-family homes, with no new construction or first-time installs; if you heat with gas, they do not apply to replacing a gas furnace on DTE's page. For a cold-climate air-source heat pump the page lists $1,200 for 16 or more SEER2, 9.1 or more HSPF2 and EER2 of 10.0 or more, $1,000 for 16 or more SEER2 and 8.4 or more HSPF2, and $900 for 15.2 to 15.99 SEER2 with 8.4 or more HSPF2. A ductless mini-split pays $1,000 above 31.5 SEER2 with HSPF2 of 10 and $700 from 17 to 31.5 SEER2 with HSPF2 of 8, and must replace electric heating. Status, checked Oct 19, 2026: DTE's page shows a Limited Funds Available banner, rebates are first come, first served, and the page carries no publish date. Try first: Ask the contractor which DTE tier the exact heat pump model reaches.

Stop and call someone if: The quote counts a rebate your heating fuel does not qualify for.

Chosen when: Who is your utility: Consumers Energy; What are you replacing or adding: Heat pump · or · Who is your utility: Consumers Energy; What are you replacing or adding: Ductless mini-split

On Consumers Energy's 2026 chart an air-source heat pump at 15.2 SEER2 or more earns $300 as a replacement for an existing heat pump only, so it does not cover a first-time heat pump replacing a gas furnace. A ground-source heat pump earns $200 at 17 to 18.99 EER and $300 at 19 or more. A mini-split heat pump at 17 or more SEER2 and 8 or more HSPF2 earns $350 and must replace any primary electric heat. Ann Arbor A2ZERO heat pump rebate (checked Oct 19, 2026)

Chosen when: Who is your utility: Ann Arbor city program (A2ZERO); What are you replacing or adding: Heat pump

The City of Ann Arbor's A2ZERO home energy rebates list cold-climate heat pumps at up to $5,500 (the table shows $4,000 at the market-rate level) and ductwork at up to $2,500, and no rebate may exceed 90% of cost. The heat pump must be listed on ashp.neep.org with at least 15.2 SEER2 and 8 HSPF2, and a dual-fuel setup is not eligible. Checks arrive 6 to 8 weeks after approval.
