Thermostat installation in Michigan: who may do it and what pays you back

Short answer

Thermostat installation is the smallest job in this trade, and in Michigan the rebate matters more than the labor. DTE offers $50 for a Wi-Fi thermostat, one per household, with applications due within six months of purchase and no later than December 31, 2026. ENERGY STAR says homes with high bills or that sit empty much of the day can save approximately $100 a year with a certified smart thermostat.

What a smart thermostat can save, and for whom

ENERGY STAR's estimate is conditional: homes with high heating and cooling bills, or empty much of the day, can save approximately $100 a year with a certified smart thermostat. The same page says heating and cooling costs the average household more than $900 a year. A house that is occupied all day with a low bill has less to gain from scheduling, and ENERGY STAR makes no promise for it.

Michigan heating comes first here. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give about 6,067 heating degree days at Detroit Metro airport and 6,408 at Grand Rapids, against roughly 847 and 732 cooling degree days, so the schedule that matters most is the winter one. If you leave for a stretch, the State's MiReady page says to keep the thermostat no lower than 55 F so pipes do not freeze.

DTE pays $50 for a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat, one per household, for electric or gas customers. The home must be more than 24 months old, refurbished units are excluded, and applications must come within six months of purchase and no later than December 31, 2026. Consumers Energy's 2026 chart lists $10 for a programmable thermostat, $50 for a Wi-Fi model and $100 for a Wi-Fi model for combination customers replacing a non-programmable thermostat. Lansing Board of Water & Light says smart thermostat enrollment earns incentives; its page lists no amounts. Check the rebate finder and the DTE and Consumers rebate guide before you buy.

Who may install a thermostat in Michigan

Mechanical work in Michigan generally needs a mechanical contractor's license. The statute exempts registered security alarm system providers from needing a mechanical license or local permit to install, maintain, replace or service a thermostat for an HVAC or hydronic system. That exemption is narrow and covers those providers only; it does not mean any installer may skip the license. A homeowner changing their own thermostat falls under the owner exemption for an owner-occupied single-family dwelling, with the permit and inspection the statute describes. Ask whether your city treats a like-for-like swap as replacement of a minor part, because we could not source that answer.

What the wiring involves

A thermostat is a switch that tells the furnace, boiler or air handler to start, carried on thin low-voltage wires. A smart model also needs power, and older wiring may not supply it. A company should look at the wires behind the old thermostat before the day of the job, and tell you if the new one needs an added wire or a power adapter. This is general explanation, not a code rule. For heating problems that are not about the thermostat, see furnace repair.

When a thermostat problem cannot wait

Call right away
  • The house has no heat in freezing weather and the furnace does not start from the thermostat.
  • You smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • The display is dim but the house is heating.
  • You want a smart model for next season.
If you smell gas, leave the house now. From a safe place call 911, then your gas utility: DTE's gas leak hotline is (800) 947-5000 and Consumers Energy is 800-477-5050. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get into fresh air and call 911.

Checks before you call about a dead thermostat

  1. Replace the batteries if the model takes them.
  2. Set it to heat and raise the setting several degrees above the room temperature.
  3. Check the furnace switch and the breaker for the furnace.
  4. If the furnace still will not start, read the furnace won't turn on guide.

License and permit facts for a thermostat swap

LARA says mechanical work cannot start until a permit is issued, except for replacement of minor parts. Ask your building department whether a thermostat swap counts as a minor part. Check any contractor's license number on LARA's lookup; the mechanical permit guide explains who pulls permits.

Ask for the license number and check it with your state's licensing board before any work starts. Our state pages link the lookup.

Pick your utility, your equipment and your household, and the finder shows each program's status with the date we checked it, October 19, 2026. Federal credits 25C and 25D ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS, even though ENERGY STAR's heat pump page still advertises one. It prints no amount without its program, tier and date.

Questions people ask

How much does thermostat installation cost in Michigan?

We have not collected Michigan quotes, so the first row of the table is a statewide estimate, a model and not a quote. The rows below hold wages and rebates. Ask whether the quote covers the wiring check.

Does a smart thermostat save money?

ENERGY STAR says approximately $100 a year for homes with high heating and cooling bills or that are empty much of the day. It is an estimate for those homes and makes no promise for any other.

What thermostat rebates exist in Michigan?

DTE pays $50 and Consumers Energy pays $10, $50 or $100, depending on the model and your fuel. Funds are limited, so check each page before you buy.

Can I install my own thermostat in Michigan?

An owner-occupant of a single-family home may, under the owner exemption, with the permit and inspection the statute describes. Ask your city how it treats a like-for-like swap.

What temperature should I leave the thermostat at when I am away in winter?

Michigan's MiReady page says no lower than 55 F if you are away. The reason is frozen pipes.
