Short answer

AC repair cost in Michigan depends on what failed, what part it takes, and whether refrigerant work is involved, and we have no Michigan company price to give you because we have not yet collected what companies publish. The AC repair page carries a labelled statewide estimate. We can show what technicians are paid, what some cities charge for permits, and the federal rules that shape a refrigerant job.

Why Michigan air conditioning is a short, hard season

Cooling here is a summer job. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals count about 847 cooling degree days a year at Detroit Metro Airport, about 732 in Grand Rapids and about 656 at Lansing’s airport, compared with heating degree days in the thousands. An air conditioner can sit idle for most of the year and then fail on the first week of heat, which is when every other homeowner’s air conditioner is also being asked to work.

The heating side of the ledger is covered in furnace repair cost. This page covers the cooling side, and the same habit helps with both: learn what shapes the bill before you need a technician.

What an AC repair bill is made of

We have no Michigan breakdown of an AC repair bill, so this section is general explanation with no numbers. There is a visit or diagnostic fee, the technician’s time to find what failed, a part, and the labor to fit it. ENERGY STAR’s maintenance checklist names the condensate drain on central air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps in cooling mode, adding that a plugged drain can cause water damage in the house.

Some repairs add one more thing, which is refrigerant. That is where federal rules change what the job involves.

Refrigerant rules that shape the job

EPA Section 608 requires technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerant to be certified through an EPA-approved test. Only certified technicians may buy refrigerant for stationary air conditioning, and EPA prohibits venting it on purpose while servicing. For you, the practical result is that a company topping up a system should be a company whose technician holds that credential, so ask.

Older systems raise a common worry. EPA says U.S. production and import of R-22 ended January 1, 2020, but you may continue to use it in an existing system for as long as necessary. EPA also calls propane-based “R-22a” highly flammable and not an acceptable substitute in residential air conditioning. Newer equipment is covered by a separate rule: from January 1, 2025, EPA limits stationary residential air conditioners and heat pumps to a global warming potential of 700. That applies to new equipment, and the page we read says nothing banning service of an existing system.

What we have, and what we are still collecting

Our table of company prices is empty for now. We are collecting what Michigan heating and cooling companies publish on their own sites, and when we have enough they will appear with the number of companies and the date we read them. Meanwhile the table holds what we can source.

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 wage release; the permit schedules named, read October 19, 2026. Wages are what technicians are paid, not what you are charged. Permit fees apply to replacement and new work, so a repair may carry none.

Permits, licenses and who may work on it

LARA says mechanical work needs a permit except for replacement of minor parts, and its exemption list names window air conditioners of not more than 1.5 hp. A repair that swaps a minor part is therefore different from replacing the system, and your city office or contractor can say which applies. For the code behind this, see the mechanical permit guide.

On the licensing side, Michigan law says a person may not install, alter or service mechanical work unless the person or an employee holds a mechanical contractor’s license in that classification. Michigan has limited and unlimited refrigeration and air conditioning service classes, and our reading is that they cover servicing an air conditioner; LARA does not print a sentence that maps an air conditioner to one class. Ask each company for its license number and look it up on LARA.

Questions to ask before the technician starts

Ask what the visit fee covers and whether it is credited to the repair. Ask for the diagnosis in writing, with the part named, the labor listed and a note on whether refrigerant is involved, and keep it with the invoice, since a second company will want to see what the first one found. If a technician proposes replacing a unit, ask what it would take to repair it, and for the reasons in writing. ENERGY STAR says equipment more than 10 years old, or not keeping the house comfortable, should be evaluated by a professional HVAC contractor, which marks a point for an evaluation and gives no lifespan.

Replacement has its own floor. Central air conditioners made on or after January 1, 2023 must meet 13.4 SEER2 for a split system. For what that decision involves, see AC repair and AC installation.

Our guide to finding a licensed HVAC contractor covers the license lookup and where to complain if a job goes wrong.

Questions people ask

How much does AC repair cost in Michigan?

We have no Michigan company figure yet, because no company prices are in our table. The AC repair page shows a statewide estimate, a model and not a quote. Ask for the diagnosis, parts and labor as separate lines on a written quote.

How much is an AC service call?

We have no sourced Michigan service call figure. Some companies apply the fee to the repair and some do not, so ask what it covers before you book.

How often should an air conditioner be serviced?

ENERGY STAR recommends an annual pre-season check-up by a contractor, with cooling checked in spring. It also says to change or clean filters monthly. That is advice from ENERGY STAR and not a Michigan legal requirement.

Can I add refrigerant to my AC myself?

Under EPA Section 608, only EPA-certified technicians may buy refrigerant for stationary air conditioning, which means a homeowner without certification cannot legally buy it to charge a home system. That is our reading of EPA's sales restriction. The same rules prohibit venting refrigerant on purpose.

Is it illegal to repair an older AC that uses R-22?

No. EPA says U.S. production and import of R-22 ended January 1, 2020, and that you may continue to use it in an existing system for as long as necessary. EPA also warns that propane-based R-22a is not an acceptable substitute in residential air conditioning.
