What counts as an emergency call and who may answer it
The model prices emergency work per hour of labor, before any call-out fee. It rests on one national figure scaled by 0.88, because no Florida company price for this job was counted.
Anyone who answers must still be certified or registered by the state, since s.489.115(1) bars contracting without being so in the proper classification.
Florida emergency HVAC labor: the hourly estimate
We estimate $105 to $255 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee for this job in Florida. That's a model, not a quote: one national published cost range, widened by 15 percent each side and adjusted by the Florida wage ratio to the US (0.88).
The hourly estimate is $105 to $255 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee, which is an estimate and not a quote. Ask for the call-out fee and the hourly rate in writing before the technician starts.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $105 to $255 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Florida HVAC technician wage ratio (0.88). Seven Florida HVAC companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Florida company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Technician wage, Florida mean | $27.55 an hour | May 2025 BLS pay for Florida HVAC technicians, before a company's overhead and after-hours rate. |
| Technician wage, national mean (BLS) | $31.14 an hour | Used with the Florida mean to set the ratio of 0.88. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. We have no counted Florida company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Our national estimate takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Florida's HVAC technician mean wage ratio to the US (0.88, BLS OEWS May 2025, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers). The wage and permit rows below are what HVAC technicians are paid and what a city charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes. Full method. Prices as of Oct 24, 2026.
The license number, and what Florida law adds
DBPR's FAQ requires the license number on offers of service, bids, contracts, advertisements, signs and vehicles. Under s.489.127, a first violation by an unlicensed person is a first-degree misdemeanor, and one during a Governor-declared state of emergency is a third-degree felony. A local business tax receipt is not a license.
The Attorney General says a contractor that collects more than 10 percent up front must apply for the permit within 30 days and start work within 90, and the contract must carry the right to cancel within 3 days. Run the number through DBPR's lookup before you pay.
Getting an AC replacement permitted after hours
Pompano Beach's A/C change-out checklist, updated in 2019, lets an emergency replacement go in with the permit application filed by the next working business day. Miami's Easy Permit program lists A/C change-outs among the small jobs a qualified contractor can permit by e-mail at once.
When a failure can't wait until morning
- A gas smell: get everyone outside and call 911 from there.
- Smoke, a burning smell or a carbon monoxide alarm: leave the house and call 911.
- The AC or heat stopped, everyone is well and the temperature in the house is tolerable.
Check these before anything else, because a yes to any of them changes what you do first.
- Smell gas, or is a carbon monoxide alarm going off? Leave the house and call 911 or the emergency number printed on your gas bill.
- Is the heat out while it's below freezing outside, or is an older person or a baby at home?
- Is the cooling out during a heat advisory?
- Is water leaking around the unit, or is there a breaker that won't stop tripping?
- Is there a burning or electrical smell coming from the vents or the unit?
Said yes to the first question? Leave the house and call 911, then your gas utility from outside. For a yes to any of questions 2 to 5, use the form with Emergency ticked, and switch the unit off if you smell burning.
Before you let anyone start
- Read the license number on the truck and look it up on myfloridalicense.com.
- Ask for the call-out fee and hourly rate, and have them in writing.
- Do not pay the full amount up front.
Does an emergency AC or furnace swap still need a permit?
The $7,500 single-family permit exemption in s.553.79 excludes mechanical work, so it doesn't cover a system swapped in the night. Ask the company which day it will file the application.
Florida licenses air-conditioning contractors through DBPR, so before any work starts, get the license number and look it up on DBPR's license search at myfloridalicense.com.
Questions people ask
Can an unlicensed person fix my AC after a hurricane?
No. Section 489.127 makes it a third-degree felony during a Governor-declared state of emergency. A first violation outside an emergency is a first-degree misdemeanor. You can report an unlicensed contractor to DBPR's unlicensed activity line at 1.866.532.1440.
What can a company ask me to pay up front?
The Attorney General's advice says to never pay the full amount up front. A contractor collecting more than 10 percent up front must apply for the permit within 30 days and start work within 90. The contract must include the buyer's right to cancel.
Is the AC failure an emergency or can it wait?
Gas, smoke or a carbon monoxide alarm is an emergency; a weak system can wait. The AC repair page covers non-urgent faults, and the furnace repair page covers heating.
