How the Florida AC repair estimate is built
The repair range starts from published national figures and is scaled by 0.88, which is Florida's mean technician wage of $27.55 an hour divided by the national $31.14. We counted no Florida company price for an AC repair, so the range has no local sample in it.
Florida AC repair: our estimate and the pay behind it
We estimate $115 to $660 per repair for this job in Florida. That's a model, not a quote: one national published cost range, widened by 15 percent each side and adjusted by the Florida wage ratio to the US (0.88).
Our estimate for this job is $115 to $660 per repair, an estimate and not a quote. Get the diagnostic fee, the part and any refrigerant priced on separate lines.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $115 to $660 per repair | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Florida HVAC technician wage ratio (0.88). Seven Florida HVAC companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Florida company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Technician wage, Florida mean | $27.55 an hour | May 2025 BLS pay for Florida heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics; a repair bill adds parts and the company's own rate. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. We have no counted Florida company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Our national estimate takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Florida's HVAC technician mean wage ratio to the US (0.88, BLS OEWS May 2025, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers). The wage and permit rows below are what HVAC technicians are paid and what a city charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes. Full method. Prices as of Oct 24, 2026.
What the federal refrigerant rule says about a repair visit
EPA's Section 608 page says the Clean Air Act prohibits intentionally venting ozone-depleting refrigerants and substitutes such as HFCs while maintaining, servicing, repairing or disposing of air conditioning equipment, under 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F. EPA also links a final rule on HFC emissions reduction and reclamation dated Oct 11, 2024. Its Technology Transitions program sets limits on HFCs in air conditioning and heat pumps. Ask how the company recovers refrigerant.
Reading the license number on the truck
DBPR's contractor FAQ says a license number belongs on any offer of service, bid, contract, advertisement, sign or vehicle that shows the contractor's name. Section 489.127 adds that a business tax receipt from a city or county is not a license for this part of the law.
A certified contractor may work anywhere in the state, while s.489.105(10) lets a registered contractor work only in the jurisdictions where the competency requirements were met. Look the number up on myfloridalicense.com before the technician opens the unit.
When an AC failure turns urgent
- A gas smell near the air handler or furnace: get everyone outside, then call 911 from there.
- Smoke or a burning smell from the outdoor unit or air handler: leave the house and call 911.
- The system cools slowly or cycles on and off, and the house is still safe to stay in.
Before the technician arrives
- Photograph the outdoor unit's data plate and note the model number.
- Look the contractor's number up on myfloridalicense.com and read the license type shown.
- Ask whether the quote replaces a part or the system, because the city lists above treat the two differently.
Which AC repairs need a city permit in Florida
Miami's 'Work Exempt from Permit' page lists replacement parts that do not alter approval, mechanical repairs under $2,500, duct repair and coil, compressor or refrigerant piping repair. Hernando County's no-permit list includes repair of existing air conditioning equipment. Pompano Beach's checklist goes the other way: the installation, alteration or major repair of any air conditioning system needs a mechanical permit. Statewide, the $7,500 single-family exemption in s.553.79 excludes mechanical work. Call your permit office with the name of the part that failed.
Florida licenses air-conditioning contractors through DBPR, so before any work starts, get the license number and look it up on DBPR's license search at myfloridalicense.com.
Questions people ask
Can a Florida AC company vent refrigerant while it repairs a unit?
No. EPA's Section 608 rule bars intentionally venting these refrigerants during service. The prohibition covers ozone-depleting refrigerants and substitutes such as HFCs whenever equipment is maintained, serviced, repaired or disposed of. Ask the company what it does with the refrigerant it removes.
Does a repair under $2,500 skip the license rule?
Section 489.103 exempts casual, minor or inconsequential work priced under $2,500, but not for a person who advertises as a contractor. The exemption also fails when the job is part of a larger operation or was split into smaller contracts to avoid the statute. The Attorney General's contractor advice starts with checking the license on DBPR's site.
When is a new AC worth more than another repair?
Set the repair quote against the cost of a new system. Our installed-system estimate is $6,250 to $12,800 per installed system, also an estimate and not a quote. The repair-or-replace tool works from your own numbers.
Does my city need to approve an AC repair?
Some city lists treat part swaps as permit-free and equipment replacement as permit work. Miami, Hernando County and Pompano Beach word the line differently, so the permit office for your address has the answer. Your city page names the office.
