What the statute wording covers
Section 489.105 says Class A contractors' services are unlimited for central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system. The mechanical contractor category also covers boilers and unfired pressure vessel systems. Neither definition names purifiers, humidifiers, UV lights or filters, so ask DBPR's Customer Contact Center at 850.487.1395 whether your device counts.
Florida air quality equipment: the installed estimate
We estimate $300 to $4,075 per installed system for this job in Florida. That's a model, not a quote: one national published cost range, widened by 15 percent each side and adjusted by the Florida wage ratio to the US (0.88).
The estimate for this work is $300 to $4,075 per installed system, an estimate and not a quote. Ask which device and which part of the system the number assumes.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $300 to $4,075 per installed system | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Florida HVAC technician wage ratio (0.88). Seven Florida HVAC companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Florida company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Technician wage, Florida mean | $27.55 an hour | May 2025 BLS pay for Florida HVAC technicians; equipment prices come on top of labor. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. We have no counted Florida company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Our national estimate takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Florida's HVAC technician mean wage ratio to the US (0.88, BLS OEWS May 2025, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers). The wage and permit rows below are what HVAC technicians are paid and what a city charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes. Full method. Prices as of Oct 24, 2026.
Performance claims belong in the contract
Ask the company to put any claim about what a device removes from the air into the contract, with the product's model number. Look up its license number on myfloridalicense.com if it will cut into ducts or wiring.
Air quality problems that can't wait
- Smoke or a burning smell from the unit: leave the house and call 911.
- The carbon monoxide alarm sounds: move everyone outdoors and call 911.
- The air smells stale or dusty, and no alarm has sounded.
Before you buy
- Ask which device the quote covers and where it connects.
- Get the product's model number and its claim in the contract.
- Look up the installer's license number on myfloridalicense.com.
Do air quality additions need a permit?
Lee County's guide requires a mechanical permit to install, alter or replace any HVAC equipment or ductwork. Ask your permit office whether a device that attaches to the system or the ducts falls under that.
Florida licenses air-conditioning contractors through DBPR, so before any work starts, get the license number and look it up on DBPR's license search at myfloridalicense.com.
Questions people ask
Does an air purifier installation need a Florida contractor license?
DBPR's contact center answers that for a given device. Class A covers heating and ventilating systems and duct work in connection with a complete system. Section 489.103's $2,500 exemption for casual or minor work excludes anyone who advertises as a contractor.
Do Florida utilities pay for air quality equipment?
OUC and JEA pay toward duct work and tune-ups. OUC lists duct repair or replacement up to $100 and JEA lists a $50 HVAC tune-up. The rebate finder checks what applies to you.
