Heating and cooling in Melbourne
Mechanical has no row of its own on Melbourne's Building Permit Fees schedule, effective August 7, 2026. It lists mechanical among the construction permits priced by an estimated-cost table: $65.00 for $1,000 and less and $6.50 per additional $1,000 up to $50,000. Multi-trade permits add $35 per trade review. The Building Section page says the Florida Building Code, Eighth Edition (2023), including the 2020 National Electrical Code, became effective January 1, 2024.
An application submitted before the effective date is governed by the code in effect on the application date. No local amendment is listed there. Call 321-608-7900 or email BLDplanreview@mlbfl.org; the Building Section is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Field inspectors take calls from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Filing happens in the EnerGov online portal, with drawings, proof of ownership and estimated value. Review takes 5 to 7 working days.
That's typical for residential work. The post-storm guide places the office at City Hall, Second Floor, 900 E. Strawbridge Avenue. Melbourne's FAQ says an Exemption Request is open to single-family work under $7,500 with no electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas or structural work. Mechanical work doesn't qualify. The estimated value on the application sets the fee from that table.
What heating and cooling work costs near Melbourne
Nobody's given us a quote for work in Melbourne yet, so this page can't show a city price. The Florida page lists the estimates with what technicians earn (the Florida mean in May 2025 BLS wage data is $27.55 an hour, which is their pay, not your price) and some city and county permit fees. How we estimate costs.
Permits for heating and cooling work in Melbourne
Florida cities and counties issue the permit for replacing an air conditioner, heat pump or furnace, and each sets its own fee; the state's $7,500 small-job permit exemption leaves out mechanical work. DBPR certifies or registers the air-conditioning contractor, so ask for that license number as well as what your permit office needs.
